Thankful for Others

From the Pastors Desk - May 04, 2022

I spent our wonderful 80 degree weekend outside doing yard work. Saturday, I weeded our asparagus patch in the garden while my husband trimmed some of our fruit trees. Attempting to keep a decent garden and small orchard can become quite a herculean task. Then there’s the weather- too dry, too wet, too warm, too cold, too cloudy, too buggy! It seems that the weather and nature works against us most years. Every year I look at the garden and think how happy I am to not have to rely on feeding my family for a year off of our gardening skills or lack thereof. And every year I think about how thankful I am for farmers. Perhaps it’s only my opinion, but I truly believe that farming has to be one of the most difficult jobs anyone could take on. Long hours, tough conditions and pay that won’t put you on the Forbes wealthiest list. Yet without them- yikes, I don’t even want to think about that one!

Since it is almost May, that means Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Now, if you’ve grown up in a loving family you know that every day is Mother’s Day, not just the one day a year the greeting card companies set aside. I am truly thankful for my wonderful mom! She is a great woman who is still a source of inspiration and advice, and I feel truly blessed to be her daughter! I hope that you all are, or were, able to feel the same way about your mothers as well! Funny, but good mothers are like farmers. Being a mother is a difficult job putting in long hours, tough conditions and pay that won’t put you on the Forbes wealthiest list, but the rewards are well worth it.

Finally, I am thankful for all of you as well. Thank you for keeping Good Shepherd going. Thank you for your volunteer hours and your support. Without you the doors would not be open. Thank you! Thank you! You are all amazing and awesome!

Faithfully, Lei Fahrner
