From the Pastors Desk - August 01, 2020
I used to watch it a great deal. One of my favorite categories always was potpourri. This category does not have a theme like the other categories do. No science theme or Academy Award movies theme. I am convinced that this category was never one where the writers sit down together and say “Hey, I think we should research and write potpourri clues today.” Rather, I suspect that these are clues that never saw the light of day and were so clever that the writing team did not want to leave them behind, thus creating the potpourri category. So this is a potpourri pastor’s article. A little about a handful of things rather than a larger one-themed article. I will even stick to the Jeopardy question/answer format!
When do we go back to indoor worship like it was in February?
Simple answer: No idea, but not soon. More complex answer is that we are reading and listening to everything we can. The survey we sent out to everyone in mid spring showed a vast majority of our members are not prepared to do in the building worship. We promise that we will keep the entire Good Shepherd family in the loop as decisions are made. We will be taking things slowly and in the best interest of public health.
Is online worship here to stay? Yes. Even when in-person; in the building worship resumes we will record an online service so that those who do not feel comfortable gathering in person may continue to join us. (Paper Worship at Home will continue to be mailed, so long as it is needed.)
How is Good Shepherd doing financially? We are doing well. The air-conditioning bills are lower when you don’t need to air-condition the building. Thank you to all who faithfully mail in their offerings and to those who are keeping up all the little building chores, routine and special.
Is the building still closed? Yes. Ed checks things regularly (almost daily), I am there periodically and others come and go, but it is not a gathering or meeting space. The Council meets monthly for 30 minutes, in the Fellowship Hall with everyone wearing masks, strict social distancing, and those who are sick do not attend.
What happened to Synod Assembly? I thought the Bishop had announced that he planned to retire rather than stand for re-election? Synod Assembly, scheduled to take place in early June, was cancelled. Yes, the Bishop planned to retire July 31, but said “yes” to the Synod Council asking him to serve until his replacement was elected. An online Synod Assembly is scheduled September 11 & 12, during which a new Bishop will be elected.
Isn’t God’s Work Our Hands Sunday coming soon? Yes. September 13. Because we can’t make blankets or assemble hygiene kits we are looking at doing a food drive for a local food bank. Also, look elsewhere in this newsletter for information on the greeting-card drive for St. Luke’s Lutheran Home.
