From the Pastors Desk - February 01, 2023
I am sorry that the situation did not turn out better for our part time pastoral candidate. Unfortunately, things just didn’t work out financially, and the situation would not have been the best use of his time or ours. I believe that we are all searching for the most appropriate candidate for Good Shepherd, so we will continue as is for a little while longer.
While I am more than happy to provide Sunday sermons and Sunday school, I find that one thing I struggle to have time to do is to call and/or visit people. People are in and out of the hospital and I never get a chance to call. We have shut ins who haven’t seen any member of the congregation for three years (of course there was a little thing called Covid for two of those). Not having time to keep up with our members is a continuing source of frustration to me.
When I called for a Stephen Ministry at the congregational meeting, I most likely misspoke. What we really need is a Good Shepherd Care and Concern Committee. Ed assured me that there is a process and training to go through for Stephen Ministers which may be more involved than we really need. (Calling for a Stephen Ministry (brand name) is like asking for a Kleenex- doesn’t everyone call a tissue a Kleenex???!!!)
What we do need is a group of people to bring communion to the shut ins and visit or call members who are in, or have been in, the hospital. When it comes to visiting, members are encouraged to go out in groups of two. This helps everyone involved so there is less likely to be awkward silence or situations. Sherry Robinson presented some good ideas to me as well. She thinks this committee could also be used for delivering meals to people who have just come home from the hospital. Really, the sky’s the limit for what this committee could do to care for the Good Shepherd membership.
Thank you to the several of you who have already volunteered! I will be getting a detailed sign-up sheet prepared in the next several weeks to pass around so everyone can see what this ministry might entail.
